About

Tonya Harris, MSHN, BCHN

Hi there.

Welcome to my “About” page!

My name is Tonya Harris, and I am a childhood environmental health educator.

You want the best for your child, and you know that means raising them in a home that’s free of as many toxins as possible.

But you also feel a little overwhelmed (or maybe even A LOT overwhelmed) by all of the information out there on what to buy, what not to buy, what to use, what not to use, and to make matters worse, it seems to change every day!

You need a professional to take that huge project off your to-do list and just give you a step-by-step plant to follow to help you provide your children with the healthiest environment possible.

And you need somebody to show you how to do that without depriving yourself and your family of your favorite things.
And you need somebody who realizes that it’s not about perfection or taking on the nearly impossible task of removing every.single.toxin. from your house. Really, who has time for that?

My mission is to help you learn how to quickly and easily take the toxins out of your home without completely turning your life upside down. It’s about a healthy balance.

How Did I Get Where I Am Today?

My journey began way back in 1982, when I was diagnosed with leukemia. It was just two weeks before my 7th birthday. (It’s OK. I’ll wait. I know you’re calculating my age in your head!), and from that point forward, I had to be careful about what products I use and what foods I eat.

But guess what? I found out years later that I really knew almost nothing about what to look for to determine that I was really buying safer products.

See, anyone can slap the word natural on a product. It means nothing. And to make matters worse, the FDA doesn’t require that the labels tell you about all of the dangerous toxins that are hidden in many of your favorite products.

When I had my children, I felt comfortable using products formulated for babies because if it’s made for babies, it has to be safe, right? WRONG!!

ABOUT pg image

It wasn’t until my children began showing symptoms of ADHD and learning disabilities that I got serious and dug in to find how to read labels and find hidden toxins that could be affecting our health.
Talk about motivation!

In 2006, my son’s teacher called to tell me that they wanted to test him for ADD. Deep down, I just knew that altering some things in our home or our food might make a difference with his symptoms, though, so I asked them to wait before they tested him.

They agreed to wait, and just a few months and several food and product substitutions later, the school no longer saw any need to test him! Now, I’m not saying he was “cured” or that we don’t see the symptoms still cropping up from time to time, but there was definitely a noticeable difference. And that’s when I was officially and totally hooked on the natural approach!

When my daughter was in third grade, I got another call from the school. This time, it was to tell me that my daughter’s test results showed that she had a “severe” learning disability.

Again, I hit the books. I went back to school and I started studying not only the effects toxins have on our overall health but also researching what we can do to support our children’s overall development and brain health.

I used what I learned to write my Master’s thesis when I earned my Master’s degree in Holistic Nutrition.

While we won’t necessarily be curing your child’s ADHD or learning disabilities, allergies, or asthma, we can reduce their symptoms through the removal of some of the toxins they are exposed to on a daily basis.

Did you know that children can’t detoxify and get rid of the chemicals easily as adults can? And children who already have health or learning issues may struggle even more when they are exposed to these chemicals.

So knowing this, I dug in even deeper and came up with a system to help myself read labels quickly, and to know the top ingredients to avoid when it comes to my family’s health. And because of my nutrition background, I’m able to add healthy, brainboosting foods into my children’s diet. (Pretty simply, might I add. Full disclosure: I’m a nutritionist that doesn’t necessarily like to cook!)

So keep checking back here for simple solutions to taking out the toxins so that your family can thrive!
